Definition: Inhibin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by granulosa cells of the ovary and Sertoli cells of the testis.
The inhibin-alpha subunit is also expressed in other human tissues such as the prostate, brain, and adrenal cortex, as well as cells of the fetoplacental unit.
Immunochemistry
The alpha-inhibin immunohistochemical stain is used as a differential marker for adrenocortical tumors, placental and gestational trophoblastic lesions, and sex cord stromal tumors, such as granulosa cell tumors, luteinized thecomas, and Leydig cell tumors.
In pancreatic tumors, positive staining was only reported in luteinizing cells of the ovarian-like stroma of mucinous cystic neoplasms.
