caseating granuloma
Wednesday 14 December 2011
caseating granulomatous inflammation;
Definition: granulomatous inflammation with caseous necrosis
Etiology
mycobacterial infections
- tuberculosis
- other mycobacterial infections
fungal species
cesarean scar caseating granuloma
systemic sarcoidosis with caseating granuloma
Few infectious agents have been associated with caseating granulomatous inflammation.
The vast majority of infectious granulomatous adenitis with caseous necrosis is seen with localised or disseminated mycobacterial infections, both tuberculous and non-tuberculous.
Many other fungal species such as dimorphic fungi, Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida sp. can cause granulomas in various organs, including for some the lymph nodes.
However, except for Histoplasma capsulatum, they do not usually present with caseating granulomas.
Many non-infectious diseases are also associated with the presence of non caseating granulomas.
