Webpathology

Synopsis

- The Brenner tumors are composed of solid and cystic nests of epithelium resembling transitional epithelium in a dense fibroblastic stroma.
- The transitional epithelial cells have sharply defined outlines, oval nuclei with longitudinal grooves, and small or inconspicuous nucleoli.
- Nests of transitional cells with pale cytoplasm scattered in a dense stroma.
- The stromal component usually resembles an ovarian fibroma and may contain luteinized cells.
- Estrogen secretion by stromal cells may occasionally result in endocrine manifestations.
- Irregular nests of benign transitional (urothelial) cells are scattered in dense hyalinized stroma in this benign Brenner tumor.
- Brenner tumor may have small or large cysts. Often, these cysts are lined by mucinous epithelium beneath which are transitional epithelium-type cells.
