benign Brenner tumor of the ovary
Webpathology |
Synopsis
The Brenner tumors are composed of solid and cystic nests of epithelium resembling transitional epithelium in a dense fibroblastic stroma.
The transitional epithelial cells have sharply defined outlines, oval nuclei with longitudinal grooves, and small or inconspicuous nucleoli.
Nests of transitional cells with pale cytoplasm scattered in a dense stroma.
The stromal component usually resembles an ovarian fibroma and may contain luteinized cells.
Estrogen secretion by stromal cells may occasionally result in endocrine manifestations.
Irregular nests of benign transitional (urothelial) cells are scattered in dense hyalinized stroma in this benign Brenner tumor.
Brenner tumor may have small or large cysts. Often, these cysts are lined by mucinous epithelium beneath which are transitional epithelium-type cells.
